Noticing Something Off? Your Tires Could Be to Blame.

Your tires are the only part of your car that touches the road—so when they’re worn or damaged, your safety and performance take a hit. From handling issues to blowout risks, worn tires can cause serious problems if ignored. Knowing when to replace them can keep you safer and save you money down the road.

Here are 8 common signs that it’s time to get your tires checked or replaced.

  1. Uneven Tread Wear

If one part of your tire looks more worn than the others, it could mean poor alignment, suspension problems, or inconsistent inflation. Uneven wear reduces traction and can lead to dangerous driving conditions, especially on wet roads.

  1. Low Tread Depth

Tires with low tread lose grip, especially in rain or snow. If your tread depth is 2/32 of an inch or less, it’s time for replacements. Try the penny test: place a penny in the tread groove with Lincoln’s head down. If you can see his full head, your tread is too worn.

  1. Cracks or Bulges

Notice cracks in the rubber or bulging sidewalls? These can indicate aging or internal tire damage—often from potholes or curbs. Both increase your risk of a blowout and mean it’s time to swap out your tires.

  1. Vibration While Driving

Some road vibration is normal—but if your car starts shaking unusually or you feel it through the steering wheel, it could be due to worn tires, internal separation, or poor alignment.

  1. Frequent Low Tire Pressure

If your tire pressure keeps dropping, even after refills, there may be a puncture or structural damage. Consistent pressure issues affect fuel efficiency and safety—and often mean you need a new tire.

  1. Poor Traction or Handling

Skidding in rain? Slipping while turning? If your tires aren’t gripping like they used to, it’s a major red flag. Worn tires can increase stopping distances and reduce control on slick roads.

  1. Tire Age

Even if your tread looks fine, tires should generally be replaced every 6 to 10 years. Over time, rubber breaks down and performance declines. You can check your tire’s manufacture date on the sidewall.

  1. Unusual Tire Noises

Hearing thumping, squealing, or a humming sound while you drive? Odd noises can point to internal issues, separated treads, or uneven wear—and are a good reason to get your tires inspected.
